Hitting Bottom: The First Step
"There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth;
not going all the way and not starting." -Buddha
All human beings need and deserve some form of sanctuary in their lives--a place where they can count on feeling safe, comfortable and at peace; a place where they come to rest and rejuvenate. Usually it is the home that provides this sanctuary from the world. But for many, home is a source of stress, shame and overwhelming defeat.
Sometimes people have to hit a bottom with their living situation before they become willing to reach out for help and begin to do the work involved in removing clutter and creating order. Like any new journey, it all begins with one thing--the first step.
"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative, there is one elementary truth: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now." -Goethe
